Apollo 11 Technical Crew Debriefing, 1969
Buzz Aldrin's own words, captured in a formal NASA debriefing just days after splashdown, describe three unexplained observations from the first crewed Moon landing mission. The most striking is an object spotted roughly a day out from the Moon — large enough that the crew reached for a monocular to examine it — along with mysterious light flashes inside the darkened cabin and a bright light on the return trip they could only tentatively attribute to a laser. What makes this record significant isn't speculation, it's provenance: these are trained astronauts filing a technical report, not recounting a story years later. The crew's own hedged language — "tentatively ascribed," "I guess," "I'm sure I saw it" — captures exactly the kind of careful uncertainty that makes the document worth reading closely.
Apollo 11 was the third crewed mission to the Moon and the first to land Astronauts on the lunar surface. This document is an excerpt from the Apollo 11 Technical Crew Debriefing (Volumes 1 and 2) from July 31, 1969. The document highlights three observations: one, an object on the way out to the Moon; two, flashes of light inside the cabin; and three, a sighting on the return trip of a bright light tentatively assumed by the crew to be a laser.
